中阿含經凡六十卷，為北傳四阿含之一。相當於南傳五阿含之中部，乃佛陀為利根眾生說諸種深義，為學問者所習。全經共有五誦，十八品，二二二經，收於大正藏第一冊。本經為不長不短經典之總集，旨在揭示四諦、十二因緣、譬喻，以敘述佛及諸弟子所說之教義為主，間亦含有佛陀對弟子、異學、王者、居士等之教誡。本經較雜阿含作進一步之法相分別，視佛陀為三十二相具足之佛身。若雜阿含為經之正體，中阿含則具有論之味道。《佛光大藏經．中阿含》採用歷代各版藏經，加以標點斷句，校勘注解，重新編排，是一部現代人人能讀，讀而易解，解而能信，信而易行的佛教聖典。
