Description

IMPORTANT INFO: * This app will always be free on the Sustainable Oceans Society website * By purchasing this app you are supporting The Great White Project - a study of Great White Sharks in New Zealand conducted by non-profit the Sustainable Oceans Society * New shark locations appear in the app whenever a shark surfaces from the water. Unfortunately we have no control over when or where this happens. * This is a long-term effort - sharks are tagged on an annual basis and we hope to gradually add more sharks to the app over time. Your ongoing support through sharing this with friends and family, leaving positive reviews and purchasing this app are all ways to help us both continue our mission and also add more sharks to the app (therefore more locations). The Great White App is a shark tracking app that lets you explore sharks tagged by the Sustainable Oceans Society. Explore the live map and learn about different sharks and their stories, see photos and view their migration over time. FAQs: Q: Why hasn't a shark moved in x days, weeks or months? A: Locations only occur when a shark's dorsal fin, and thus the satellite tag, break the surface of the ocean and link to satellites in orbit. It isn't uncommon for the sharks to spend weeks underwater before coming to surface again Q: How accurate are locations? The longer the tag is above the water, the more accurate a location fix from satellites. Highly accurate locations are to within less than 250m while some very brief satellite fixes make locations only accurate to several kilometres which is why, at times, some shark locations may appear to be 'on the land' but it is due to lower accuracy locations, near the coast. Q: What does purchasing this app do? A: The app will always be free to access on our website sustainableoceansociety.co.nz . Purchasing the app funds future tagging of the sharks, continued conservation efforts and development of the app. The Sustainable Oceans Society is on a mission to study how the way we live affects the oceans and its inhabitants. We're a non-profit organisation focussed on marine conservation and ocean sustainability. Our aim is to operate our own research projects and campaigns as well as support sustainable research, ideas and initiatives. Through the sponsorship of shark tags and by purchasing this app you are helping our mission to improve the health of New Zealand's natural seafood resources, reduce the amount of rubbish and pollutants in the ocean and you are supporting research and educational initiatives aimed towards improving our knowledge of New Zealand's marine resources.
